Moog Synthesizer Concert To Benefit School Tour
Ask the average person what he knows about a Moog Synthesizer, and he'll probably respond with "a what?" But there are probably very few people who haven't heard sounds produced by this electric marvel developed by Dr. Robert Moog of East Aurora.
The Moog, as it is known to those in the know, is used extensively in television commercial soundtracks. It's also part of the rock scene, with names like Alice Cooper, The Beatles, The Captain and Tennille using the Moog for both unconventional sounds and the duplication of music made by "conventional" instruments. Movie sound tracks (A Clockword Orange) and TV programs (Sesame Street) are on the list too.
But surprisingly, what some may have dismissed as a transistor twanger got its biggest boost from Bach, not the Beatles. In 1968 composer Walter Carlos recorded "Switched-On Bach" using the synthesizer and the record became the best selling classical LP album ever produced.
The synthesizer, despite its unconventional method of generating music, has obviously gained recognition as a musical instrument as opposed to a sound-producing gadget. The limitations of the Moog seem to be more likely the artist using it rather than the synthesizer itself.
The Moog Synthesizer comes in a variety of forms from minis to studio models.
Dr. Moog will explain and demonstrate the Moog Synthesizer in "Moog Experience", Friday, April 30 at the East Aurora High school auditorium, at 8:30 p.m.
All program proceeds will go to the East Aurora Middle School "see America Tour" project. Tickets are available at Nyharts music Center, from members of team 6B, or at the door. For more information call 652-5020 or 652-6043.
